Dr. J. Reed Rayher and the team at Union Square Oral Surgery & Dental Implant are happy to provide our patients with dental implants in San Francisco, California. In order for your procedure to be successful, you will need to follow our post-operative instructions, and take proper care of your implants. If you would like to find out if you are a good candidate for dental implants, please contact our office at 415-397-1400 to schedule your consultation.
Immediately after your procedure, you may experience tenderness, or minor swelling, bruising or bleeding. If these symptoms persist or worsen in the days following your surgery, you should contact us right away. You can use an ice or cold pack to relieve swelling; and applying a moist tea bag or clean gauze gently to the implant site for twenty minutes should help with any bleeding. Take any prescribed medications as directed by the doctor. You should only drink cold or cool liquids for the first six hours after your surgery and then you can resume eating. Stick to soft foods for the first seven days after your procedure. After 24 hours, you can resume gently brushing your teeth.
Once your implant site has healed, you should brush your teeth, including your implants twice a day, and floss at least once a day. Avoid smoking or tobacco use, and continue to see your dentist for your routine appointments. Your implants can last a lifetime, but you could damage them with tough foods, or by chewing on ice, pens, or other objects. If you grind your teeth, which is a condition known as bruxism, you should talk with your dentist about treating the problem.
